How To Make a Website
Want a website? Here are three simple options. The best form of a website is a blog so I focused on wordpress. Wordpress is the best bloging software that will give your website richness and simplicity of posting.
The fastest way to set up a blog is to go to http://wordpress.com and sign up, it’s as simple as setting up an email account. In few minutes you can have your own website with an address like this http://overstep.wordpress.com where “overstep” is a custom name. You will get a nice control panel where you can customize your website, change themes, view statistics, but most of all you will be able to publish your articles in such an easy way as writing emails. No other skills required and all is completely free. The main downturn is that you probably want an address like this “yourname.com”, if that’s the case then leave this option to your grandma.
The second option is to buy mentioned domain name “yourname.com” for about $10/year and host your website for free. The best free hosting that I found and tested is http://xtreemhost.com – this is as of the year 2009, if you are reading this years after then just do a google search for “best free hosting comparison” or “free host review”. Back to xtreemhost.com – first sign up for a free hosting and buy a domain name. That way you have your private website. It will be empty, you can put there your own html files. How to do this? The simplest way to write your single paged website is to write it in a Microsoft Word or in other editor, then from the “save as” or “export” menu select “html”, save your file as “index.html” and upload to your hosting via FTP. This will give a simple website, however highly recommended is puting a wordpress on your hosting. Go to http://wordpress.org/download and follow the installation guide. Wordpress is free, you got hosting for free and only paid $10 for a domain name. The downturn of a free hosting is that on occassions your website may not be available to your visitors or the page can load slower than usually.
Third option is to get a good paid hosting. I highly recommeng Bluehost. This is where my website is hosted. The price plan is 6.95/month if you decide for either 2 or 3 years. Why people like Bluehost? It is the best professional hosting for the price of a regular hosting. Bluehost has unlimited space, unlimited transfer, free domain, support is lightning fast, FTP access is fast too. Control panel works well and there are many amazing features. Wordpress software is already in bluehost panel so you don’t need go anywhere else to get it.
Whether you choose any of three options above go ahead and keep posting. Once you have some great material online you need some external links to your website so you get happy human readers that are amazed by your website – commonly abbreviated to “traffic”. To get external links register your website to free web directories like dmoz.org, full list here http://www.web-directories.ws/General/Free/, also do include your link below your forum posts and in your email signature. For a nice kickstart of popularity submit your articles to http://blogcarnival.com – it is a community of bloggers that help to promote good websites, it is better than just link exchange because articles are reviewed and filtered by someone. Scroll to the bottom of that page and click “More blog carnivals…” that will lead you to http://blogcarnival.com/bc/clist.html Sort by “Next Edition” and select upcoming carnivals that are best match for your articles. Sorting carnivals by date is the best because they are often poping out two weeks or so before publication. Creating a website is a begining of “either a daring adventure or nothing” – it depends on you not on Hellen Keller.
