Topicsmaster Role – Questions To Ask
Topicsmaster is one of the most important roles in Toastmasters club. Last Monday I did it and below are listed question that I asked the audience. They were not as easy as normally on a topics session. I wanted to know audiences opinion and my how I would behave asking those questions.
- We have a St Patrick’s day. What are the most important Irish qualities?
- What product was your best choice, product that gave you most satisfaction, which served you well above your expectations?
- “Statistically, 40% of all home study courses never even get opened. They are still sitting in their original packaging.” How about you? What courses, trainings, books, CDs, utilities or any products you intended once to use but you did not take action? Explain why.
- Communication – what is important in communication, whether personal or written
- Imagine an alien race visiting our planet. They want to know who we are and want to speak with one of us. Our representative will welcome them and introduce the whole human kind to them. Our planet will represent ……….
- Astral Projection. There are people that claim that they can separate their consciousness out of the body. What is your opinion on astral projection. Is it dangerous, are there any learning and growth possibilities or perhaps it is a hoax and nothing to worry about?
- There is a popular question “What would you do if you had only 6 months to live”. We are going to turn it around. What would you do now if you had “only” 600 years more to live? How would you spend those 600 years?
and those were spare question that I didn’t asked:
- Now we going to time travel. What is the future of Toastmasters? How would meetings look like a 500 years from now?
- If you had a chance to stay on a stage for 2 minutes in front of a million people and could say something what would you say?
- What are your assumption that you suspect that they may not turn out as you thought.
- Give some public speaking tips
- Customers needs anticipation. What new needs will customers have in the future?
- Which person has helped you most and why?
- What services would you like to recommend?
- What is the best way for you to learn?
- What are your plans for the spring?
- What film would you like to recommend?
- What is your favorite holiday destination?
- What is your favorite place to have lunch?
- What do you usually do on St Patrick’s day?
How does a topics session look like? There is between 15-20 minutes to do that. You sit at the top table, explain your role saying that there will be about three people per question, answers up to two minutes, avoid controversial topics like sex, religion and politics. Guests do not have to answer but they can volunteer if they want to. You also give a chance for members to volunteer but it is better to pick them by name, in that case the surprise is greater. The purpose of a topics session is to rehearse speaking off the cuff, give concise answers in unexpected situations. Topics should be easy to answer within a broad range, usualy taken from everyday life and recent news.
