Raw Vegan Food Questions

Frequent question I receive is how much does it cost to be raw? Raw food I eat costs about the same as normal food I ate before, even less. I spend about €70 (about $100) weekly on food in Dublin which is quite an expensive city. Processed vegan food can be much more expensive especially if you need replacement for all regular food or if you need a special treats frequently. For me there is no much need. In 2007 and early 2008 while I was vegan I used to eat vegan chocolate, vegan cookies, soy yoghourts, vegan mayonnaise – tastes good with tofu. But afterwards I didn’t need it any longer. I started to introduce more and more raw food, at the beginning I ate strawberries, blueberries, grapes, lots of nuts, lots of avocados. Later I realized that it is not efficient – not because of the cost but because of nutrients – now I eat less sweets, less fat and more greens. It is possible to stay raw and healthy just for pennies: carrots are dirt cheap, bananas, iceberg lettuce, celery are cheap too. You fill it up with remaining nutrients and B12 and you are done. It may seem not appealing but after a while your taste buds will adjust to this food so it will taste great, better than any cooked food. The best option to minimize costs is to shop in a large food stores and take advantage of buy one get one free etc. offers. To summarize this answer: a balanced, healthy and tasty daily supply of raw food costs equal or less than a daily supply of regular food.

The next common question is why I eat so much? It is because raw food is mostly water and fiber, I have quite fast metabolism and I also heard that thinking burns a lot of calories – that must be it :) My weight stayed quite the same after I switched to vegan and when I switched to raw vegan – it is 150 lb (70kg) and I am 6.1 ft (185cm) tall. I am slim no matter what and how much I eat, however nearly all raw people loose quite a lot of weight even if they eat extensively.

Does it take long to prepare raw food? It could if you like to play with it. I eat fruits and some of vegetables as they are – whole. For my main supply of vegs I use a food processor. I shred 20 lb (10kg) per week and that’s enough, it takes two hours but it is per week. Occasionally I make smoothies, prepare special treats or do experiments. I am still a fairly young raw foodist – under one year – and my diet is constantly evolving.
